What is School Start?
School Start is an online retailer that offers convenient, competitively priced school supplies. Kits can be customized to meet unique family needs and orders can be shipped directly to the home or to the school. There is an option for families to donate $5, $10 or $15 funds to the school, 100% of each donation will be used for students.
Do I have to purchase supplies online through School Start?
No. Families are encouraged to shop at any retail outlet that meets their needs. School Start is meant to provide families with a convenient, competitively priced option to purchase school supplies online; orders can be shipped directly to the home.
What if the cost of supplies is a concern for me?
Please connect with your child’s teacher or school administration if the cost of school supplies will be a concern for you.
Do I have to purchase all new school supplies?
No. Many families will have school supplies left over from previous years, you are only asked to purchase items from the list that you don’t have.
Why do I have to purchase school supplies for my child, when I have not had to in the past?
We understand that this change is not ideal for families and worked to ease this transition by creating accessible, cost effective options for families.
Historically schools charged a yearly fee/child for supplies and then provided all necessary item in the classroom. Government regulations changed in 2017, and school divisions were very restricted on what they could collect for school fees to cover the costs of supplies. In the past four years, the source of previous fee revenue paid by parents was replaced with grant funding. As of the 2020-2021 school year, that source of grant funding is no longer available and the cost needs to be covered by families. Schools are permitted to charge extra curricular fees to students that choose to participate in sports, options classes or other extra curricular activities. All fees must continue to be approved by the Medicine Hat Public Board of Education.
